Yes, I strongly believe iPad and its clones going toe be the future of common man computer.I believe its not 90% of the people, but 90% of the task even for geeks can be lot easier to do with iPad than with a laptop or desktop.

I just tried an iPad for the first time. In the words of Captain Lunatic (“loo-NA-tick”) from the Upright Citizens Brigade, “Damn you, bong boy!” It sort of fits in my purse. The long dimension fits in, but it stick up a bit. The leather flap still goes over, but doesn’t close well.

Now I have to decide what to do…

Goal: a bigger portable internet tablet than my iPhone for use when I travel. I’m thinking maybe the recently leaked Dell 7″ android tablet. Or the iPad.

The iPad is prettier and easier to use. The Android devices are more capable in many respects and more fun to program. (I hate Objective C with a passion. It is an ugly, stylistically bastardized language.)

Josh, there isn’t a WebOS tablet, is there?

I like the iPad, but as you said, we’re not the target audience. If I had money to just throw around I’d get one, just as a novelty, but I don’t.

I like my iPhone as a convergence device. I don’t do a lot of mobile video (or music, really), but I like the PIM functions combined with a phone. It’s good enough.

As you said, for 90% of the people, maybe even more, it does maybe 90% of what they want.

Nice review. The biggest question for me; is it usable to take notes on during a meeting? Aside from some accidental web surfing, I don’t see what else I would be doing on it (placing an iPad on the table is less intrusive than a laptop). For the rest; watching video’s in a private fashion I’m expecting those video glasses will be the end solution soon (no need to hold up something and perfect 3D is available immediately). Music listening pretty much is covered by existing devices. And I would look silly holding the iPad to my ear for calling. It seems to path to convergence (one device does all) has ended and we’re now on divergence (an optimized device for a specific task).

Fair and balanced review… agree with everything!

The single-tasking thing is also an issue for content creation, but perhaps the OS4 Fast Switching will be good enough to reduce that.

As you said, I’m also not the target market. I loved it but haven’t bought one, but sometimes I “miss” it like a phantom limb. I have seen great use of it in group meetings, at dinner, people hovering over them and sharing things, passing them around, in a way you just can’t and would never do with a laptop. Very exciting.
